What is Clear Quartz?
Quartz is the most common mineral that you’ll find on Earth! Occurring in many varieties of rock across all mineral environments, it can be found in slew of different colors and formations.
Clear quartz, often referred to as Rock Crystal, is one of the most popular crystals to use in spiritual practices. Probably due to its abundance, and belief that it can be a replacement for any crystal in a spiritual practice, this important mineral is usually one of the first stones a witch will add to their collection!
Locations where Clear Quartz is found Naturally
While Clear Quartz can be found pretty much everywhere on Earth, these locations are the most predominant for the mining and collection of this mineral.
- The Alps
- Brazil
- Madagascar
- Japan
- United States
Similar Crystals or Variants
There are actually a TON of types of Quartz crystals! Wayyyy too many for me to list here, but I’ve included some of the more popular ones you might come across or wish to add to your collection here!
Smoky Quartz is a type of quartz that ranges in coloration from yellowish brown to near black. This quartz is created by natural radiation being emitted by nearby rock, which changes color around aluminum impurities inside the crystal.
Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz which gets its unique color from irradiations, iron impurities, and other trace minerals.
Rose Quartz is a type of quartz that shows a pink to reddish hue; this color is caused by intrusions of titanium, iron, or manganese inside the crystal.
Garden Quartz, also known as Lodolite or Dream Stone, is a clear quartz that is filled with various inclusions of other material including but not limited to: feldspar, chlorite, and hematite.
Phantom Quartz (sometimes lumped together with Garden Quartz) is a clear quartz which shows an internal imprint of earlier stages of crystal growth, creating a “phantom” crystal inside.
Hematoid Quartz, known as Fire Quartz when reddish and Golden Healer Quartz when yellowish or brown, this color difference is caused by hematite and iron inclusions within the quartz.
Specularite Quartz is created when a clear quartz and the specularite variety of hematite grow as inclusions or in tandem on the same cluster. This crystal is more rare and typically found in Europe, or North or South America.
Citrine is a name given to all yellow quartz. The only true difference between Yellow Quartz, Lemon Quartz, and Citrine are the saturation and tones of color on the stone. Citrine is sometimes also a heat-treated form of amethyst.
Fire & Ice Quartz, also called Rainbow Quartz is created when clear quartz is heated quickly and then immediately cooled. This process creates a crackle effect which reflects light and can produce rainbows inside the crystal.
Angel Aura Quartz is clear quartz that is treated with heat, and then is given a layer of platinum or silver through a process called chemical vapor deposition, or CVD. This creates a clear quartz specimen that has a rainbow iridescent exterior.
Titanium Aura Quartz is another heat-treated variety that goes through the process of CVD and is coated with a layer of titanium, producing a vibrant colored iridescent exterior.
Lemurian Quartz is a variety of clear quartz found in either Colombia or the Diamantina region of Brazil. This crystal is distinctive in its horizontal striations or grooves found on the exterior of the specimen, and crystal clear insides.
Spirit Quartz, also called Pineapple Quartz or Cactus Quartz, is a unique variety that is only found in South Africa. This crystal usually features a main point or cluster that is coated with tiny terminated points. This crystal can exist as amethyst, citrine, clear, or smoky quartz varieties.
Rutilated Quartz is a variety of quartz that contains acicular (stick or needle-like) inclusions of rutile; a black or reddish crystal that is made of titanium dioxide.

Quality Indicators for Clear Quartz
When purchasing clear quartz, here are some quality indicators to help you determine if the price point is correct for your new mineral
- Determining if your crystal is natural or lab-grown
- Natural quartz is usually heavier
- Natural quartz will be cooler to the touch than manufactured
- Natural clear quartz will have more color variation as well as irregular striations (small, usually parallel scratches or grooves)
- If the exterior looks more rock-like which the inside seems more glossy, this is a good indicator that it was a mined specimen
- Clear Quartz is worth more when it’s fully intact (i.e. no scratches, or broken points)
- Druzy specimens can be worth more
- Unique formations or inclusions can increase value
Standard Grading with Clear Quartz
AAA: This is the top grade use for most stones including gems outside of diamonds. The quartz must be totally clean in and out with no damages and scratches. The facets must have sharp and smooth edges and the transparency must be as clear as water ( colorless). A lemurian quarts with frosted and clear sides can also be classified as a AAA quarts as long as the frosted facets and clear facets are uniform.
AA: Quartz in this grade can have contact marks or minor inclusions, but not both. The quartz must be clean in and out with no damages. The facets must have sharp edges and it must be water clear, colorless.
A: Quartz in this grade can have contact marks and minor inclusions , it can be clear but the crystal has to be in good shape with no severe cracks.
B: Quartz in this grade can have contacts, damage, inclusions but not all three at once.
C: Quartz in this grade has contacts, damage, and inclusions.
